Realised post I made in Off Topic should probably be here:
So does anyone around these parts know what software you can use to create subtitles that which can be used in a Blu ray title if we have the subs as an STL file. It seems the format is BDN XML usually with 8Bit PNG files...
Anybody know how to create them?
Steve
To expand on this - we have the subtitles created for the DVD project and need to "port" them over to the Blu ray version. One wrinkle is that we have subs moving around the screen (in some instances so that the onscreen graphics aren't obscured we have moved them to top of the screen). So should we just be able to give the authoring house the STL file as created (externally) for the Blu ray (unfortunately we aren't authoring it ourselves unless the development team here get that Blu ray software out REAL quick :-)....). Will all the commands which pertain to the on screen position be honoured or is there some software we can get that will export the STL file as the appropriate XML file for use in Blu Ray with the associated graphics files?
Thanks
Hi Steve Here's a tool which
Hi Steve
Here's a tool which might be helpful:

Lemony - that's good
That's good as I have a licence for Lemony so should be just an upgrade. It's probably the best subtitler available for converting one format to another. It wasn't horrendous price wise.
XML subs ?
Hi Guys,
This isn't something I know much about, but according to this thread, there is an XML format for supplying subs...?

Steve Just received an email
Steve
Just received an email from sonic about their NAB BD presentation. I guess they'll have a discussion about creating and converting subtitles for Blu-ray Disc. The tool is called Lemony. I'd love to go but I'll be busy :(

It will be sold through Sonic - which basically means you will have to sell your first born to use it.
Very similar to subtitling
Very similar to subtitling for DVD-Video A customized solution for sure - for now anyway. Something to allow the operator to scrub through the video, listen to the audio, then write out the text on screen while logging TC. Compiling spits out your PNGs and writes the XML.
Use outside vendor
I agree that using an outside vendor might be an idea but it wouldn't possible in this case unfortunately. What tools would they use to do this...
Yes...you create them
Yes...you create them externally...one by one. Back breaking work IMO :) The "0" X,Y coordinates is the position of the PNG relative to the stream (upper left corner). To create subtitles that appear at the top of the screen you would need to design those PNGs to reflect how you need the text to appear on screen. Personally I would have an outside vendor do this kind of work. No way in heck I would do this myself..and it would be cheaper to go that route for the client as well.
Your authoring company should have all this information ready
Thereby lies part of the problem - they've never done a subtitled film (normal DVD or Blu ray)
Looks fairly straightforward in terms of how the file is laid out. So there's no straightforward way of taking the STL we have and converting it... :-(
Presumably the X and Y are the default when they are zeroed. How would they be moved to the top of the screen - what value would need to be put in there.
So what do folk do at the moment in terms of subtitles for Blu ray - don't they create them externally?
Hi Steve
Hi Steve
Here a sample BDN XML:
Events>
Event Forced="False" InTC="00:03:39:03" OutTC="00:03:41:02">
Graphic Width="1920" Height="1080" X="0" Y="0">line0001.png
Event Forced="False" InTC="00:03:50:08" OutTC="00:03:53:19">
Graphic Width="1920" Height="1080" X="0" Y="0">line0002.png
Event Forced="False" InTC="00:04:00:03" OutTC="00:04:04:07">
Graphic Width="1920" Height="1080" X="0" Y="0">line0004.png
Event Forced="False" InTC="00:04:14:11" OutTC="00:04:16:10">
Graphic Width="1920" Height="1080" X="0" Y="0">line0005.png
Event Forced="False" InTC="00:04:19:10" OutTC="00:04:22:00">
Graphic Width="1920" Height="1080" X="0" Y="0">line0006.png
As you can see, the position is based on each .PNG layout. Don't know of any tools to convert. I supposed you could write a small program yourself to do the conversion. Any text editing tool will be fine. Your authoring company should have all this information ready for you...best to check with them.
