Hi guys
Besides being able to read the DLT 8000-written tapes (which I need to do), would I have a speed increase writing tapes from TFDVDedit or Apple DVD SP on a 8000 compared to a 4000? (the one I have now)
I also need to know if a Compaq 40/80 tape drive LVD is a 8000 by another name.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Enrique,
There is a tremendous difference in the transfer rates of the various drive models. If you use a DLT III tape on a later model, the speed reverts to that of a DLT2000. The speeds are:
DLT2000 - 1.25 mb/sec.
DLT4000 - 1.5 mb/sec.
DLT7000 - 5 mb/sec.
DLT8000 - 6 mb/sec.
As you can see, there is a tremendous speed improvement in going to at least a DLT7000., An if you want to read tapes from others, you need a DLT8000 in order to be able to read a tape created on any drive.
So if you get a DLT8000, it will write four times faster than your DLT4000.
An yes, a 40/80 is the same as an 8000. But LVD means Low Voltage Differential, so your SCSI card will probably not support it. HVD means High Voltage Differential, for which there are no SCSI cards available on the Mac. You should try to find an SE drive, which means Single Ended SCSI. Differential means that the device measures the difference between the voltages on two lines, rather than one line always being at ground and the other at full voltage.
(Ian, this post should go in the FAQ list).

Hi Larry
Thanks for the thorugh reply!. If memory serves me well, I remember an old post from Trai telling someone to return and exchange an HVD model for the LVD one.
Are there two flavors of LVD? SE and Non-SE? I though LVD was kosher for our use. My card is an Adaptec 2930CU, but I've got an ATTO on its way here too. Would any of them work with an LVD? Or does it have to be LVD SE?
So many questions...so little time... ;-)
Best to you

Hi Enrique,
Yes, after asking John Brisbin, an LVD drive should work fine with the ATTO card. The 2930CU is not recommended, and if you do a Google search you will find reports of it preventing proper operation of Tiger even if nothing is connected to it. We do not guarantee that TFDVDEdit will run with any Adaptec cards, though some customers have no problems. I have had intermittent success and failures with my Adaptec cards, but I don't use them any more.

Larry
