Hi guys,
I have a couple of DVD9 projects that consist of one or two VTS. There is really nothing fancy to do, except remove old warnings (sometimes in VMG, and sometimes in VTSM), and replace 4:3 studio ident with 16:9 one when appropriate.
I can import a new VTS/VTSM, but it will be placed at the end of a disc on layer 1 after the movie, and although it is working properly seems to me an ackward way to do things.
Re-importing all VTS's in order I want takes a long tiime, especially when the movie VTS is big.
Can I move VTS's within the project without re-importing hassle? I could not figure that one.
Alex.
I've never understood the reasons for this...
I keep hearing this business that it's "bad" to jump from the front of the disc on L0 to the end of the disc on L1. There are plenty of discs that do this - on start up and/or just as a matter of course during playback (e.g. selecting the last chapter of a movie in the last TT on the disc from a menu in VMG space).
Is there more to this statement than just an andecdote which has been repeated until it's now considered fact? I would love to know.
NOTE: I say this having authored plenty of discs which jump from First Play to a TT at the end of L1. So far, no complaints. ;->

I've taken the easy route
and tested the DVD- DL on a number of players. Works fine and you really need to look for the delay as the player goes back and forth between the layers. I presume the average viewer will never know.
Just out of curiosity: last time I replaced a movie VTS (6.3 GB) it took about 15 hours to import on Dual 2,7 GHz PPC with 4 GB of RAM. Are the numbers in your experience in the same area?
Alex
Should be fine
Hi Alex,
I agonised over this a while back for exactly the same reasons, and eventually settled for having the new VTS a the end of the disc. I've done several projects this way since and had no complaints so far. So yes, I think abstraction-layer jumping from layer to layer at the start of the disc is best avoided, but a clean Jump TT should be fine. One caveat - as you know some players having difficulties, and I think also some software players, will play the first VTS on the disc as a fallback position, which isn't ideal and is why I prefer to have copyright & warnings in VTS 1. However the pain involved in moving all the VTS around isn't worth it, especially given the added risk of an error.
Just this once, take the easy route ;-)
Ian
I am saying this is not a problem
Do what's simple and easy. Your client isn't going to come back and complain about the TT # of the logo.
For peace of mind, you can make a +R DL proof disc and test in all of the different brands/models of players you should own for just this purpose. ;->

Another way to do this
Another way to do this would be creating a VIDEO_TS with many dummy VTS's so you can use it as a template. Then you just have to replace VTS's in the order you want and paste the commands.

How do I change VTS's order in a project without big hassle?
I can remove some of the PGC's of VMG if needed, this is not the issue of replacing it entirely, but rather having a disc to navigate from VMG to the end of a second layer and back, or rather a disc starting from VTS2 at the end of second layer, and then going back to the beginning of a first.
I don't mind changing a LB position, I usually can find a better place for it than the original author :-)
The project is a library re-release from Universal Pictures, and that includes Battlestar Galactica.
So you guys are saying this is not a problem and I should not worry too much about it, as long as there is no abstraction layer meddling in between?
Alex
I agree...
And it´s not possible to change a part of the VMG, you only could change the complete VMG! Just keep in mind!

Think about this...
If you move stuff around and put new material before the feature, your LB could/will change. Do you really want to bother with that?
So why not just tack the new stuff on the end and be done with it?
