I hope that apple will announce a programm with advanced abillities within the BDMV-specs this year.
No-one knows for certain, but most people seem to think this is unlikely in the near future. It is planned that HDAE will have AACS support, making Encore, Ulead etc. viable options, fwiw, however they will still be basic as you say. And of course you should keep an eye out in case anything is announced here ;-)
The boys in Japan should have something for us soon as well.
Also start to think about workflows where you do your dithering and color space conversions before your encoding. Apparently this is what's being done for all the H'wood titles. You can do a much better job dithering colors to reduce conditions that would result in banding while still in 4:4:4 and then convert to 4:2:0 prior to compression. This frees encoders to do what they do best.
Hello Eric,
I have an old MCC-license from Mainconcept and I know it is good. It is in deed a good encoder and the new Reference should be an alternative to cinevision, especially if it got the same engine.
Mainconcept ist based in Aachen, this is just arround 60km away from me, I´m living in Cologne, Germany.
It´s a good and cheep alternative that´s true. OK, it got no segmented encoding, but I think I could live with it. We´ll see what´ll happen.
Be sure to take a look at Main Concept's Reference encoder for AVC and VC-1. For both, it will run you under 5K. Main Concept's AVC is the exact same engine as Cinevision and their VC-1 is just as good. The only issue is the speed and the segment based solutions in Cinevision.
Also, I'd wait a little to see what come's out from HDAE, Netblender and others before spending the money - unless you have work lined up already. :) I do know this company out of Portland is about to release a BD authoring tool. I hear it will be available on a per title basis.
Hi Ian,
I know that it´s a lot money to spent on sonic BD-creator, especially if you want to buy the sonic-encoder as well. A product-manager was here last week, to show me the possibilities of the system.
I was very impressed after the session.
I´ve got encore und I made my first tests with it as well but its very very basic and it could not handle AACS.In that reason I made the decission to buy DVDitHD, because it could handle AACS and as we all know, roxio is a division of sonic. But the implementation is very basic, too, and it only could handle BD-single-layer and MPEG2HD, no h.264 or VC-1. Finally, both programms could not handle interactive menu-programming (yet?).
I hope that apple will announce a programm with advanced abillities within the BDMV-specs this year. otherwise we all have to spend a lot money.
I don´t know what will be possible with HD-afteredit within the BDMV or the maybe the BD-j, probably you know a little bit more of it.
I really looking forward to all the new possibilities that is coming with the new media.
Good to hear you'll be on board :-) Personally I would wait, if I were you - the HDMV variety of BD disc allows many similar functions to HD DVD ( pop-up menus, slideshows etc ) so you could use something like Adobe Encore to create a project, then a replication master with HDAE. e hope this will be possible very soon. So you would only need Sonic if you want advanced BD-J features like network connectivity, picture-in-picture and so on. If not, then Encore + HDAE would be much more cost-effective !
First, that report is pure speculation, at this stage. But whether it turns out to be true or not, Blu Ray formatting / mastering capabilities are well advanced, so HDAE will simply be extremely useful for those wanting to output replication masters for BD. If HD DVD survives, then it will be useful for HD DVD - if not, no big deal. SD DVD is also going to be around for a long time to come, so HDAE's editing and formatting capabilities will be very useful there, especially given the enhanced functionality ( which isn't enabled in the current alpha, yet ) and Applescript automation.
The big question is whether Blu Ray editing will be desirable and/or possible - this is something Larry is researching at the moment. To some extent it depends on demand, which depends how many of our customers are going to author in Blu Ray.
