Sector Size in Preferences?

Hi Folks

I'm working on a DVD-9 title which is filled to the brim. However, AE does not give me a layer break. I went into preferences and changed the "DVD-9 Layer max size" and everything went fine. My question is how will this effect my DDP image? Could anyone point me to some documentation on preference settings?

Thanks
E

I got it writing.

Michael is exactly right. We

Michael is exactly right. We checked several sources to arrive at the figures we used, so it might be possible to squeeze a bit more on the disc. That is why we put it in the preferences, since all replicators are not created equal.

To answer your other question, the reason that it did not fit is that it must find a cell on which to make the layer break, and there are probably no cells in the small layer break area. You can create a cell by choosing a Nav Pack in the left pane on which to make the layer break. (Contextual menu). Then be sure to save the project after you choose it - look at the log and it will tell you what it did. Then for safety quit the program, wait for the save to complete even if it takes a long time, the start it up again and you should see a blank log.

Hope this helps. Of course you can ask your replicator how much leeway you have.

Larry

Thanks!

Thanks Micheal

Thats weird. Other titles which were the same size contained the layer break no problem - just this 1 title has issues. I have to do some more research here. Why would AE even include this option in preferences?

Potential issue

If you increased the max number of sectors per layer to make everything fit then you may find that some - maybe most - replicators will not be able to master your DVD. This will be revealed when the image is taken into a verifier (like Eclipse).

The total number sectors that can be replicated is a function of the settings in the laser used to etch the glass master. In my experience and based on some research I did a few years ago, the numbers in DVDAE's preferences reflect something of an industry standard - though some replicators may be willing to try for more sectors than this.

YMMV.
