Fwiw, Apple requires a minimum G5 to play a DVDSP authored HD DVD - the capability is disabled in the DVD Player otherwise. It may be possible to get around this using Pacifist, though.
As far as HDAE goes, I have been alpha-testing on my aging G4, dual 1 GHz, only 768 MB RAM, and it runs very well. The code optimisation means that in many areas it is more responsive than v3. Of course the real killer is previewing HD content - the system above previews 720p MPEG-2 comfortably, however ymmv.
We are still involved in alpha testing of the product at this time.
I run debug version of the product in 1Gb of system memory without any problem. It is likely that it will work with even less memory but I'd recommend at least 1 Gb.
As far as burners go there still isn't any support for burning directly to HD discs, but we will create DDP images of HD discs that can be used in mastering. It will burn SD content to any superdrive or compatible drive connected to the Mac including dual layer support.
