Presentation-DVD: how to get fastest response times between charts?

Hello everybody,
this will be my first real world DVD AE project so please have patience with me.
Until now i only removed some logos from existing DVDs and did some reading and small tutorials with DVD AE.
Nevertheless i have good (scripting) experience with DVD SP and Maestro, but im just starting learning spec based authoring.

So far for my Background heres my project:

Im Authoring a DVD with only one "Powerpoint like" Presentation stream.
the stream will contain:

- 60 charts (Stills with 3 hidden buttons, where 2 are "auto activated" for jumping forward and backward in the presentation)
- 10 movies (somewere between the charts, you jump in the movie by clicking forward in one chart and end up in the next chart after the movie)

As this presentation will be played on a dedicated player where i know it is a realy slow one, i want to create the fastest solution possible. Shortest ways for the Laser and smallest amount of code possible.

Another point is that we have to do the same presentation for different countries so i want to easily replace the charts and movies.

So here are my questions on how to create this the best way:

- In which area of the DVD i will have the fastes response between the charts?
VMG or VTSM or VTS (Button over Video)

- How do i link charts for fastest response? Link cell or Link PG? (I just read that link cell could make trouble...)

- Should i build one long PGC with all charts and movies or divide it?

- I will start from ab DVD-SP project. The charts will be put in one timeline with button over video and autostop chapters. Is it possible to automaticaly shorten the charts to one Vob? I only want one navpack per chart. But DVD_SP allows by default only one second.

- Will i get any problems in DVD AE when using Button over video from DVD-SP?

thats it for now, if this already discussed you could also direct me to the topic.

Thanks for your time,
Matthias

HDAfterEdit will have Applescript support

Hi Matthias,

The good news is that HDAfterEdit will have Applescript support, which should eventually allow us to do exactly what you want, although not in the initial release - it already has a Spotlight-style search function enabled, though.

> I always thought DVD-SP has to jump to the VMG also between the menus.

I haven't looked at this in detail recently, it's possible they've streamlined things - certainly it always used to jump back to the VMG when using transitions.

> I'm not realy sure if the DVD becomes so much faster when i re-edit it in Afteredit, or do i miss something?

It sounds as if you may be right - my advice is to do a quick test and see how it "feels" in a player. Slideshows have always felt pretty responsive to me, "out of the box".

Hi Ian,i forgot how this

Hi Ian,
i forgot how this cell dragging was working but now im back on track, thank you.

With Excel i can drag those tables with the button commands and excel creates new tables with ascending numbers. But i then have those new created commands side by side and not at the right command line position.

Something like a find/replace with +1 function might work (dont know how to describe it better).
I searched for BB-lite but its only for classic which i dont have. textWrangler seems to be an updated version with similar features. I have to check this out but as you say it might give headaches to find the right string for this replace.

It would be great to have something like that directly in afteredit (paste button commands deeply into with special features, yeah :-))
By the way i just authored the presentation structure in DVD-SP and checked the programming in DVD-afteredit. I am surprised. DVD-SP dont use so much code for jumping from menu to menu!
Its just Link tail PGC. and in the postcommand its less than 15 lines to jump to the next PGC.

I always thought DVD-SP has to jump to the VMG also between the menus.

Im not realy sure if the DVD becomes so much faster when i re-edit it in Afteredit, or do i miss something?

Anyway thanks for your help!
Matthias

Hi Matthias,Yes, you can

Hi Matthias,

Yes, you can leave the cell still time as-is. To get a single-PGC structure, you can delete all the other PGCs using the Program Map Editor and then drag all the cells into the first PGC - ask me if you need more detail, or check out Ben's Spec Authoring articles.

I have used BBEdit Lite to make "Find & Replace" alterations to commands - this will work fine, but sometimes it's more work figuring out a GREP string that works, than doing it by hand ! When you say "i dont get them to the right place", can you give me more detail ? You should just be able to paste them back in.

Some further questions: -

Some further questions:

- when i use menus from DVD-SP how do i get one single PGC? furthermore, are you talking about one single PGC in VTS or in VTSM?

- Is it possible to change the button commands automatically? My commands are looking like this:
----------------------------------------
#ButtonCommands Group 1 of 1 with 3 buttons from "präsitest_v2»Video Title Sets»VTS 1»VTSM 1 Menus»Deutsch»VTSM PGC 1»PG 1»Cell 1»V1C1 NavPack 1" (V2)
Nop
Link PGC 2
Link PGC 2
#PreCommands from "präsitest_v2»Video Title Sets»VTS 1»VTSM 1 Menus»Deutsch»VTSM PGC 2" (V2)

In excel i could change the commands automatically (fill series command) but i dont get them to the right place.

Thanks,
Matthias

Hi Ian, thanks for your

Hi Ian,
thanks for your response.
Cell still time is automaticly set to 255 when using still menues from DVD-SP, so i dont have to change anything there right?

I will try it with menues.

thanks,
Matthias

Use menus

Hi Matthias,

The short answer is that if you are using DVDSP, I would build these as menus. This will create single-frame, single navpack/GOP stills, all in the same VOB file, just as you would like, except for the video ones, of course. Put them in in order, and add buttons as necessary.

You can then either delete DVDSP's PGC structure and have all of them as a single PGC, using Link PG on each button, or leave each in it's own PGC as DVDSP does. I imagine the fastest will be as a single PGC using Link PG since there are no pre-commands to read, but I wouldn't expect the multi-PGC approach to be noticeably slower - the major speed benefit will be from nuking the abstraction layer and creating the button commands directly. Titles I've done like this are extremely fast and it can be nice to have the option of pre and post-commands if necessary. Either way use Cell Still Times to pause on each still. Finally, I wouldn't expect to see any difference between doing this in Menu or Title space, but maybe someone will correct me on that !

Hope that helps,

Good luck,

Cheers,

Ian
