About the Summer Offer...

Larry et al -

For those of use still entrenched in SD workflows what reasons might there exist for taking advantage of the Summer Offer on the HD product besides disc burning and PTP support (though this is something I'd need to understand more about before using only ever having made OTP discs)?

And I guess it also occurs to me to ask if you're testing the new HD features with discs authored only in DVDSP or also in Scenarist HD?

Thanks!

Michael

Hi Peter, thanks and glad to

Hi Peter, thanks and glad to have you back active on the forums. We are pretty busy with finishing off disc image building and burning, but hope to start working more closely with the early adopters with our next alpha release. Your input from an artistic and workflow viewpoint will be appreciated.

We are already working with Scenarist and Encore Alpha testers, and hope to have some preliminary results to report soon.

Regards,

Larry

Well I'm in

You convinced me. I just bought the upgrade. I'm interested in beta testing this product to give me a head start and also a little like old times. I was one of the few non tech guys breaking the present product when it was beta.

I hope I can help as well as having fun with my own work.

Anyway I have a real need of the present and upgraded product as my work flow has reached the point where I need to put out my art videos and animation.

Peter

Thanks for a very good list,

Thanks for a very good list, Ian.

Michael, to answer your other questions, PTP is only needed if the disc is very full and it is difficult to find a good OTP layer break, since it allows the layer 0 to be shorter than layer 1, instead of the opposite.

And most of the serious work being done in HDDVD today is being done with Scenarist, and several of our alpha testers are Scenarist users.

Larry

Great question !

Actually, in the new version SD and HD ( Standard Content ) share a common database, so almost all the work so far applies to SD as well as HD. In my opinion there's loads that exisiting users will want. For example:

Stuff I've already used in the current alpha build:

- A vastly improved, streamlined Cocoa interface
- Tangible speed increases ( DVD Extra demo disc opens in seconds rather than minutes )
- True project files, with many edits non-destructive and the ability to save multiple versions without copying the original files, plus "revert" to earlier versions
- Re-nameable items in the left pane
- Bookmarks for instant access to commonly used items ( root menus, say )
- Browse forward and backward through recent selections independently of Undo
- The ability to clone windows and leave them open, so that you can have the VTS overview visible at all times, for example
- Sortable and re-orderable columns - so, sort your VTS PGCs by duration, or Title number, or PGC number, or whatever
- New command viewer - view pre, post and cell commands simultaneously in a much easier way

Things that I am looking forward to trying in the next build: ( literally any day now ! )

- Disc writing - burn directly to DVD-R, including accurate layer-break placement
- Different "views" of the project, including a DVD Directory ( VIDEO_TS folder ) view - just double-click to jump to the right place in the browser; and a truly sexy new disc overview window - set the layer-break by dragging a slider ! ( Larry, is it OK to post a screenshot ? )
- Pre-mastering
- Applescript support for pre-mastering - automation/macro writing - write ten disc images, one after the other, unattended

And, in future builds:

- Drag and drop move & import - commands, VOBs, Advanced Content files, you name it
- Applescript support for all program operations
- Mastering report sheet
- Stuff I don't know about yet

And that's just the stuff that works with SD. All of this will work for Standard Content HD discs, too. One notable omission for the time being will be Tracer - the plan is to augment it's role to offer a full-featured SD and HD player-simulator-debugger. This means there is a great deal of extra work to be done - OS-X doesn't even have a workable VC-1 decoding solution, yet. So it's release will be delayed for the future when it can be done right. For SD we can still use version 3 for debugging, of course.

I hope that's useful, and I'm interested to hear your comments as always, and indeed those of anyone else reading this !

Cheers,

Ian
