DAE crashed when trying to turn a Disk Folder with ROM content into a DDP

I'm trying to bring in a DVD Video disc with ROM content and turn it into a DDP image but the app keeps crashing with the following error:

Hi Nick,I don't use DMGs as

Hi Nick,

I don't use DMGs as a rule, but I will test this to see if I can reproduce your error. The folder arrangement will be preserved even if you are just writing from a folder - I'm not sure about a background image, though, but I see no reason it should cause a crash. Here is my procedure:

- Copy files to a folder
- Set permissions as per my previous post
- Run DVDAE and open the project
- Ensure layer break is set, if necessary
- Open the log Window to check for any information messages
( If you see any, please copy and paste them here )
- Go to the File menu, and Save, if it isn't greyed out
( If it is, skip the next stage )
- Quit the program completely, re-open and check that any changed details have "stuck"
- Open the Format/Copy window
( Keep the Main window open, too - see the known issue here: Release Notes )
- Select the source
- Select the destination
- Re-confirm layer-break
- Tick the Format for CSS box
- Leave other settings as defaults: DDP 2.0, Encrypt VTS Menus only, Include Macintosh ROM Data
- Load DLT
- Manually set compression to off on the DLT
( This shouldn't be necessary, but our DLT drive is quirky )
- Click start

There are plenty of unnecessary steps there, intended to catch human error and bugs which have long since been fixed, but that's what I do. If you find it works, try from a DMG too - however you may run into the fact that it will probably be set as read-only.

It might also be worth deleting the preferences for your project before trying this procedure, too. It will be in

/root volume/Users/user name/Library/Preferences

with a name of the form

com.tfdvd.DVDAfterEdit.project.xxxx.plist

where xxxx is the enclosing folder name for each VIDEO_TS folder

Step By Step

Thanks for the info guys. Unfortunately the app is still crashing when I try to CSS encrypt.

Here's a little more detail on what I'm trying to do. I have disc image created by OS X that has a background image and all the folders arranged properly. We need to be able to keep this formatting intact and by keeping it in a .DMG format or on a DVD-R is the only way I know of to do this. Currently, trying to encrypt from the .DMG image, a folder on the desktop with all of the disc contents enclosed and from a non-encrypted DVD-R all fail. Am I going about the process incorrectly? Would it be possible to post a step-by-step so we can verify that I am doing the process correctly?

A little more detail

For anyone following this thread, the procedure I use for sorting permissions out is:

- Copy the VIDEO_TS folder to an enclosing folder on hard drive, using MacTheRipper or DVD Decryptor to remove CSS if necessary. ( If you're not sure, try just dragging the files across - if it doesn't work, then CSS is present. ) I do this even if there isn't any copy protection - I find DVD-R access isn't fast enough to work from directly.

- Select the enclosing folder and Apple-I to get the info window up.

- Unfold the Ownerships & Permissions and "Details" and set all the options to "Read & Write"

- Click on "Apply to enclosed items"

You're done.

Hi Nick, I apologize for not

Hi Nick,

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner on this. By your comment "I'm pulling it directly from a fully authored DVD" do you mean a replicated disc with CSS? If so, we do not handle that case. You must decrypt it with DVD Decryptor or similar utility and put the enclosing folder (the one that contains both the VIDEO_TS folder and the ROM data) on your hard drive.

Even if the replicated disc does not have CSS, there are sector addresses within the IFO files that depend on the method chosen by the authoring program to ensure that .BUP files do not occur within the same ECC block as the corresponding .IFO file. So if you pre-master directly from a replicated disc or other read-only media, DVDAE will not be able to change those sector addresses to match its own algorithm. True, it should detect that condition and give a warning instead of crashing (which it normally does), but even that can be thwarted by the permissions settings on folders not matching the settings on the individual files.

So if my analysis above is what has happened, you should decrypt the DVD to a hard drive and then go in with the finder and make sure all files and folders are read-write using GetInfo.

If that still doesn't solve your problem, then please mail the DVD or a copy to me, and I will troubleshoot the problem. So far, we have been able to convert every DVD or DLT that any user has encountered, unless the data itself is corrupted.

Directory Listing

I'm not pulling in from a folder on the desktop or anything. I'm pulling in directly from a fully authored DVD.

Here is the directory listing for the disc we're trying to import:

DVDAlbumDemo
URTone
wmds.ini
VIDEO_TS
assets
autorun.inf
licgen.exe
AUDIO_TS
DVDAlbum.exe
wmds.dll

Hi Nick, I just ran a test

Hi Nick,

I just ran a test on my MacBook Pro and it worked fine, I was able to create a DDP with ROM content and then convert it back to a folder, preserving the ROM content.

Did you make sure that the ROM data is inside an enclosing folder which also contains the VIDEO_TS folder, and not at the desktop or root of the drive? Can you post the contents of the enclosing folder by doing a screen dump of the enclosing folder in the finder?

Unfortunately the crash dump does not tell us much, beyond the information on your setup, since there are no symbols in the released code. Let's first try to analyze the content of your ROM data, and then take it from there.

Regards,

Larry
