Hello,
I have a query concerning subtitles. I was wondering if it is possible to play with the opacity of subtitles at the navpack level. I'd like to fade subtitles in and out over a small period of time.
I can see how to do this within menus but can't seem to find it within video.
On the authoring side of things I can achieve this using different subtitles with gradually increasing / decreasing opacity levels but I wondered if I AE would allow me to do the same thing without having to play with the script.
Any pointers would be much appreciated.
Cheers!

I would add that I did a title a few months ago with subtitles fades in/out. It did work on most players, but found 2 that didn't fade out completely, so the laste frame (say 10% opacity) subtitle was visible until next one appears. This was using DSP4.

But are you saying there's no facility in DVDAE to perform this sort of editing?
I dont know - I have no mac, but if I remember correctly you do not have control over DCSQ commands.
what you did WRT to colors (and excepting the fades) looks like something one could do with three button families in as much as the buttons are simple rectangles
You must not mix up subtitles and highlights. I guess Justin means subtitles - not buttons (highlights). It is just an example whats possible with DCSQ commands without using multiple subs.
Button families are available in highlights only and highlight editing can be performed in DVDAE at navpack level.
Button state "normal" is controlled by DCSQ in subpic-pack.
Button state "selected" is controlled by BTN_COLIT in nav-pack.
Button state "activated" is controlled by BTN_COLIT in nav-pack.
Imho it is not possible to achieve a proper fade for highlights, highlight interval has to be >= 51 frames for PAL and 61 frames for NTSC. Fade with steps of 2 seconds....
Damn cool...
Thanks for providing the example. But are you saying there's no facility in DVDAE to perform this sort of editing?
Also: not sure I understand meaning of "seven (!) color subpicture" - what you did WRT to colors (and excepting the fades) looks like something one could do with three button families in as much as the buttons are simple rectangles (i.e. need no dithering) and nothing overlaps. If something more exotic going, please share the details! ;->
Thanks again!
Michael
To fade a subtitle you will
To fade a subtitle you will have to edit the SP_DCSQ commands in the subpicture pack itself.
In navpacks you can edit menu (button) subpictures only.
I did an example for a seven (!) color subpicture (one color is transparent), fades in and out. Just an example what can be done with SP_DCSQ commands. Even more colors are possible but I have no authoring soft that can handle SP_DCSQ commands in this manner so I have done it with a hexeditor

Hey,
Thanks for the replies. I've been playing around with animated subtitles and have decided to do it the old fashioned way - scripts and tiffs, boys: scripts and tiffs.
Cheers.

P.S.
Even if it did work - getting really fancy at this level (navpacks) would be pretty tedious. ;->
I did try this...
It was very unreliable - some players seemed to obey the modifications to opacity while others ignored the change all together.
What I *didn't* do was author up a test clip using Spruce (or Scenarist which I think also supports opacity changes in subtitles) to see what a properly functioning result looked like in DVDAE. My guess this might require mods to more than one attribute.

Hi Justin,
I haven't done this, but I think Michael ( Okeanos ) might have tried it. I'm not sure if you can, though, because I think you need to be changing the default contrast values, and I don't think these are available for editing in the current version of DVDAE. In general, editing things in the nav-packs by hand is very tedious, though, so it may be better to do it in your authoring application anyway. Do you have Maestro or DVDSP ? They both allow you to do this, iirc.
