Tips for Editors

Access Control

When creating a new document that is restricted to a certain subset of the community, use the Access Control field to indicate which user groups are allowed to access the document.

  • Public documents: if the document can be viewed by anyone, whether registered or not, leave the access control set to "none"
  • To require that the visitor register (for free) and log in before viewing, select "Member"
  • For pages such as code downloads, which are restricted to users with a specific license, choose the appropriate license (Lite, Standard or ME). If a page may be viewed by a user with any license, chose "License: any".
  • Finally, Beta and/or Editor flags may be set if the material is available only to Beta testers or content editors (e.g., Ben, Larry, Donna)

You may select multiple groups. If a user's access permissions match any of the groups, they will be allowed access. So it is best to select the broadest group that has access to the information.

So, for example, if you set the "Member" flag, there is no need to set any of the other group flags, as all licensed users are members.

Please contact Donna if questions.

Content Organization and Structure

The site has are three main types of content: pages, forums and news. This article talks about the organization of the pages.

The content pages are organized into three hierarchical books:

  • About DVDAfterEdit includes the overview and specifics for the products
  • Support Department includes the FAQs and contact information
  • Resources is the largest book, including background materials, articles and tutorials, downloads and release notes

In addition there is the "Tips for Editors" book, of which this article is a piece. It is visible only to members of the "Editors" group, which at present includes Larry, Ben, Donna and Todd.

To view the outline of a book, go to the Administer section of the bottom left navigation panel, and click on "Content" and then click on "Books." You will see a list of the books plus an "Orphaned Pages" section which should be empty. Choose a book, and you will be presented with a structured view of all the contents of that book.

Creating New Content Pages

There are three kinds of content pages:

  • Pages
  • Book pages
  • Stories

We use book pages for almost all the content on the DVDAfterEdit site, as they are designed to create a content hierarchy.

We use pages only for a few items that are not part of a hierarchy, such as the Page Not Available screen.

Stories are used only for ephemeral content, such as news items.

To create a new content page, you can either:

  • Click on "add child page" at the bottom of an existing page. This is the easiest way to tuck a new book page into an existing hierarchy.
  • Click on one of the sub-items under "Create Content" in the bottom section of your left-side navigation panel.
